Will I be the only new camper?
We have lots of new campers who come to camp every summer. Almost every cabin has a couple of campers who are brand new to camp, and with our campers age 7-12 about half the campers in each cabin are new!

My child is a picky eater, how is the food?
We have lots of choices so you can always find something that you like. We have buffet style dining with a salad bar at lunch and dinner which includes peanut butter and jelly. Some of our entrees include hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza, spaghetti, lasagna, grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese, BBQ chicken, chicken nuggets, and many more. There is also always fruit available. Everyday there are two snacks, afternoon is usually ice cream or popsicle and evening snack is usually fruit before bed.

How many kids and counselors are in each cabin?
We have eight to 10 campers and two or three counselors in each cabin.

What are the cabins like?
Our cabins sleep 10 campers and two counselors.  We have wooden built in bunk beds in each cabin.  Everyone has a bed box to store all of their belongings, in addition to shelving.  All girls cabins and some boys cabins have bathrooms inside with individual showers, sinks and toilets.   The boys cabins that do not have a bathroom inside, are two steps out their door and are shared with one other cabin. Every cabin has glass windows with screens, along with exhaust fans.

What if my child wets the bed?
The counselors and administration work closely with your camper to make sure that it does not negatively affect their time at camp. Staff will work on a bathroom schedule to help reduce the opportunity for your child to wet their bed. The staff change and clean sheets during the activities so they do not disrupt their experience while attending Maplehurst. Bed-wetting is best handled with input from parents prior to the start of camp.

My friend is coming to camp, can we be in the same cabin?
If your friend is close in age as you, you can request to be in a cabin together and we will do everything we can to try to make sure you are together.

How do you supervise children at night?
After the campers in a cabin are asleep, one of the two counselors are free to leave the cabin for a few hours. Unlike most camps at Maplehurst, there is always an adult in the cabin! The Supervisor (Super) which is always an administrator over the age of 21, does constant rounds to take care of any camper concerns or problems at night. At 12 am all counselors must sign back in with the Super, and be in their cabins by 1 am to ensure non-stop coverage of camper cabins.

Where do you campers come from?
About 50% of our campers are from the Metro Detroit and Suburban Chicago areas. The rest are from cities all over the world. This year we have campers from Ohio , Arizona , California , Florida , Texas , Colorado , Utah , Mexico , France , Spain , and Germany . We find that a diverse camper base is very important! We feel that when kids come from all over, there are much less cliques at camp.

What kind of training do you counselors have?
Over 50% of our staff have been to Camp Maplehurst before, as a camper, Counselor-in-Training or as a staff member. This makes the training for a lot of them, a continuing education in Maplehurst's values of safety, physically and emotionally, and the importance of learning how to make choices. We only hire staff with a proven track record in working with children and who share our philosophy. We do have a full week of Pre-Camp training for all staff, where they are taught about child development, health and safety and emotional issues. We ensure that all staff are working towards a common goal of supporting every child to be the best they can be in a safe environment.

Where do you provide transportation from?
Camp has buses to and from Metro Detroit and Chicago depending on demand. For children from far away, our staff pick them up at the Cherry Capitol Airport in Traverse City , Michigan , and also board them on their flight home at the end of camp.

My child takes medicine, how do you handle that?
Camp has a health officer on staff, on site always. We keep your child's medication locked in our Infirmary and our nurse will make sure your child takes the meds as prescribed, and log this every day.

Do you do anything special to celebrate birthdays at camp?
Birthdays at camp are very important to us! We celebrate throughout the day with the entire camp and with the individual bunk. The birthday boy/girl will be given a cake and has the dining hall decorated especially for them. In the evening the cabin watches a movie to help their friend celebrate.

Do you have any religious affiliation?
No, we have absolutely no religious affiliation. We believe that diversity and tolerance are most important and would not want anyone to feel uncomfortable.

Do you take credit cards?
Yes, we do take credit cards, Visa and Mastercard only. We also accept checks, cash and wire transfers.

Can I send my child packages?
Absolutely, mail and packages are encouraged. Please do not include any food, candy, or gum, as it attracts animals. If a camper does receive a package containing these items, we will take them and use them at all camp programs. The campers are given plenty of sweets throughout their stay at camp, and we would like to keep the critters away from their cabins.

Will my child be taken out of camp during their stay?
Every Wednesday is trip day at Camp Maplehurst . We take the children to many different places over the summer.
