Things to know and do before you get to camp

Preparation Tips

CLOTHING
We recommend casual clothes that require no special cleaning. Please use indelible ink or sewn-in names tapes to identify ALL clothing.

Every item of clothing or equipment brought to camp should be labeled with the camper's name. We also require that every camper have a Maplehurst shirt. This makes identifying them much easier when we leave camp for trips.

What follows is a SUGGESTED clothing list. FEEL FREE TO MAKE CHANGES BASED ON YOUR CHILD'S WARDROBE, AGE, INTERESTS AND NEEDS. Please send all clothing to camp in one or two DUFFLE BAGS. NO footlockers or suitcases will be accepted due to storage issues.

ITEMS NOT ALLOWED AT CAMP

Cell phones
Electric fans
TVs and DVD players Fireworks
Walkie Talkies Knives or Hatchets
Lighter/Matches Hotplates

CELLULAR PHONES ARE NOT ALLOWED AT CAMP!
Please do not send your child to camp with a cell phone. If they own a cell phone please take it from them before they come to camp. If they are traveling via plane to camp and you must send a cell phone with them, please let us know so we can put it in the safe once they arrive. We can not be responsible for cell phones, they can be lost, broken, or stolen. Having a cell phone at camp only causes problems as some children have trouble adjusting to camp and this only makes it more difficult for them. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us!

CANDY, FOOD, SOFT DRINKS & GUM
Campers may not bring to camp or receive packages containing food, candy, soft drinks or gum.
Campers receive an adequate amount of sweets in the three meals and two snacks that camp provides daily. Additionally, the storage of food in cabins attracts rodents and other animals that raise serious health and safety concerns.
Any food, candy, or soft drinks received will be combined and used as prizes in all-camp special events.

SPECIAL NOTE
The use and/or possession of alcohol, tobacco or other illegal substances will not be tolerated at Camp Maplehurst under any circumstances, and will result in immediate dismissal from the camp.

DATES TO REMEMBER

  • June 1 - Final Payment Due
  • June 1 - All Forms Due
  • Session Dates - View our 'Dates and Fees' page via the 'Parents' Menu above
Campers should arrive and depart between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm. We will be set up for camper check-in and check-out at these times.  Flights should be scheduled as close to check in and check out times as possible.

LAUNDRY & LINENS
Camp laundry is done by a commercial laundry service, which picks up and delivers to camp once a week. Each camper's laundry is washed separately in cold water. Laundry is included in your store fee. Campers should bring their own sheets, towels, pillow and sleeping bag.

LUGGAGE
For campers taking airplanes, their luggage must accompany them. Campers on the Detroit or Chicago bus should bring their luggage with them. Luggage should consist of 2 duffle bags; NO trunks, footlockers or suitcases will be accepted due to storage issues.

MEDICAL FORMS & MEDICATION
Medical forms can be filled out by the parent or the family doctor and they must be sent to camp before your child arrives. Any special medical instructions should be addressed to the camp directors who will pass it on to the health director. Please be sure to provide any special instructions.

PERSONAL EQUIPMENT
All personal belongings brought to camp must bear the camper's name. Valuable items such as TVs, jewelry, stereo equipment and the like should not be sent to camp. Small radios and CD players and I-Pods are allowed in the cabins. Hair dryers are allowed but not encouraged. The camp cannot be responsible for lost or damaged equipment.

READING MATERIALS
You may wish to send books or magazines with your child to read during their daily rest hour and free time. We do have a small camp library and any old books you might wish to donate would be greatly appreciated.

SPENDING MONEY
Campers are provided with an appropriate amount of money for each trip taken. This is part of their store fee.  If parents wish to send additional money, we recommend that it be kept in the camp safe. Money will be collected from campers on the first night of camp for this purpose. Campers will have access to their personal money before each trip.

TELEPHONE & MAIL
Telephone calls to the camp office should be made during the morning hours. Our office phone number is 1-231-264-9675.
Camp Maplehurst policy does NOT ALLOW campers to make or receive telephone calls at camp.  We find telephone calls to be disruptive to the camp program and does not help campers adjust to camp. We strongly suggest letters, emails, packages and faxes for communicating with campers.
EXCEPTIONS, of course, will be made in circumstances where our directors and administrators feel that it is beneficial for campers to participate in a call home.  Birthdays at camp is an allowed exception for parents to call.
Letters should be written to campers often (they love getting mail) and should be newsy, but not inform the child of any bad news or imply that the parents are suffering because the child is away from home. We require that campers write home at least once per week. As the camper adjusts to camp, there may be fewer letters.

The airlines should be told the camper will be met by a Camp Maplehurst staff member.
